Happy Sunday!
Let's talk about some supplements today; what they mean,
what they are used for and why or why not we may need them. I'll also give you a list of all the supplements I currently take and why. This will be a two part series because there is just too much info to fit into one newsletter!
Supplements are not
magic. Supplements won't get you to the body you desire. Supplements have their place. Supplements are there for exactly what they say they are there for; to SUPP-LE-MENT your diet and lifestyle. They are a tool to be used when you need a little bit more of something; when your body just isn't getting a high dose and it's hard for you to incorporate that with real food. When you CAN'T get it from food and need to supplement. That's what they are used for.
A tool to help you, not magically change you.
There are THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of supplements out there. Some regulated, some not. Some that we need, A LOT that we don't. Some that
are good, MOST that are crap. Instead of weeding out all the crappy supplements, let's just talk about the good ones today, the ones that work and the ones that I personally use (and I know they work because I've used the same ones for years and years and years).
1.) Protein supplements
They work really well. Whey protein is THE NUMBER ONE researched supplement. It has been for years. It's been proven to work for years. And its a GREAT supplement to use to hit your daily protein goal (you should be aiming
for a gram of protein per body weight per day). I drink a whey protein shake every single day of my life and I have since I started lifting weights when I was 15 years old. Supplement with protein, it does a body good.
- Whey protein, plant based protein (with the proper amino acid blend), grass fed protein, any supplement that has 'whey' as its first ingredient is usually pretty good. Reach out to me if you are concerned or want me to
look at the one you currently use😇.
Top recommendations: Legion, 1st PHORM, SEEQ, Dymatize, Optimum Nutrition, PEscience.
2.) Creatine
Next to whey protein, creatine is probably the second most researched supplement out there. Creatine is very safe. VERY SAFE. It is naturally produced by our bodies every single day. However, most of us do not get enough
(including me!). We need to consume foods such as red meat, seafood and animal products to naturally get creatine through our diets. We can, however, supplement with it to ensure we are getting the amount we need. Creatine aids in supplying energy to our muscles before, during and after workouts to help build strength as well as promote brain function. Creatine is a great supplement to take for ALL ages from 12 years old allllllll the way up to 80 years old.
I've taken it my entire life. There are no side effects; it is 10000% safe, and yes, your Dr. should be allowing your teen to take creatine. Tell them to come to me for the research behind it. It will help you get a little bit stronger, help you recover a little more between sets and workouts and will just make sure you are covering all of your bases! It's not magic, but its a great choice if your priority is to build muscle.
Top recommendations: Use MICRONIZED creatine MONOHYDRATE only, all the other stuff is crap. Optimum Nutrition, PEscience, Transparent Labs.
3.) Multivitamins
Daily morning vitamins, chewable gummies, AM/PM vitamins, or whatever else they come up with nowadays. When you go to the vitamin section of any store, this can be
OVERWHELMING. There are so many damn options. Too many options. And a lot of wasted money. MOST of us should be getting our vitamins and minerals from the daily foods we eat. Thats why eating our fruits and vegetables are so important, we need those micronutrients! But, some of us just don't eat certain foods with certain micro's in them that we need for our body. Which is why I think its always good to just cover your bases and supplement with a multivitamin.
Now, we want to make sure the dose in these multivitamins are enough for us. SO many generic multivitamin brands just flat out STINK because they have such a teeny tiny amount of vitamins/minerals in them. Just make sure to do your research and look at what's going in your body. MOST of the ones they sell at CVS or your local pharmacy are probably just wasting you money instead of doing anything for you.
Top recommendations: Legion, Optimum Nutrition, BPN, Thorne.
Here's an Instagram Post from last week talking a
little bit about supplements. INSTAGRAM POST HERE. Again, they definitely have their place and should be used. Just understand they are not magic and you shouldn't be looking to them to fix all of the problems
in your body👍🏻
**If you're looking to try a new type of protein, are sick of the traditional chocolate/vanilla whey and just want something a lil different, try SEEQ HERE. It's a clear protein available in flavors like blue raspberry, strawberry lemonade, green apple, fruit punch, peach and more! My
wife, Julie, loves it! Its a nice change of pace from regular whey, click that link to give it a try!
Have a great rest of your day!
