To cardio or not to cardio...that is THEE question!
Summer is
coming.
People want to lose body fat.
So they do more cardio and aerobics hoping to burn as much body fat as possible in 2 months.
It's a never ending story in the strength and conditioning world where people ask "what can I do to
get rid of fat".
I've heard this question thousands of times and my response every time is, "change your nutrition FIRST, then worry about losing body fat".
But, no one ever likes that answer and fights me with "well I ran 7x this week" so let's discuss
below!
Let's get this out of the way FIRST, I am not anti-cardio. I AM, however, anti the idea that you need cardio to lose fat and get in the shape you desire for yourself. Because you don't. A person who is overweight or looking to body recomp (lose fat + gain muscle or that stupid word "tone")
can change the way their body looks just by improving their nutrition and strength training properly.
What cardio DOES DO is it improves your cardiovascular function. It improves the way your body can uptake oxygen. It clears your mind and distresses you by releasing endorphins. It improves your lung capacity and makes your heart really happy. Thats what cardio does. And a bunch of other stuff but we don't have space for it. You get the
point 😇.
Did ya see that I didn't list "burns fat" or "burns calories"?. You burn fat and calories throughout the day literally by walking around (which is why I emphasize walking soooo much😉). Sure cardio helps, but we don't want to look at cardio as a pure source of trying to burn calories, that sets you up for failure longterm.
If you are properly strength training, have
sufficient muscle on your body, eating sufficient protein to build said muscle, you will be a fat burning machine literally walking around all day!
Cardio should not be looked at "to burn calories" because that is setting yourself up for failure, again, and a never ending run of trying to "run away calories". When in reality, you need to understand your body, understand having more muscle will do EXACTLY what you want cardio to do,
burn fat, look leaner and be happier. Use cardio as a tool, not the end all be all.
