Happy Sunday!
What a b-e-a-utiful weekend we had here! I hope you got to
spend some time outside, doing something active or something that you enjoy. I played 3 hours of pickleball this morning...😅🤪.
Last week I had 5 things I've changed my mind on since being in the fitness industry over 10 years. Lots has changed. As a
good professional, I try to stay on top of everything fitness and nutrition related to make my life easier and all of your lives easier. Theres a lot of BS out there...lots...some stuff I used to believe, some stuff I've changed my mind on and some stuff I still believe.....like burpees being the most pointless exercise. If someone is making you do burpees (I feel bad for you) and you should just find somewhere else to train...ha!
- Body Part Splits rein supreme. NAHT. Body part splits are what most think of when they think of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Its performing Chest & Tri's one day, Back & Bi's another, Legs totally separate, Arm day, AB day...basically splitting up your entire body throughout the course of a week. I used to follow this to a T! Now, I primarily focus on upper body & lower body
splits as well as full body splits. Research shows, for the most part, these types of splits are more effective for MOST people. Body part splits have their place, but you'll get a better bang for your buck hitting more than a few body parts during a workout.
- Fat burners, BCAA's, weight-gainers, etc. Supplements work....haha. Ohhhh I would have saved myself a TON of money in college had I educated myself on supplements instead of
believing everything that BodyBuilding.com put out. My friends and I would buy the dumbest supplements alllll the time thinking we were getting an edge. Turns out we were just wasting money. Lots of money and time buying these stupid things. The 3 supplements that are GUARANTEED to work because of ACTUAL RESEARCH...Whey protein, creatine and caffeine. Stick to those three...you'll be good.
- Running ruins all your hard earned muscle.
NAHT. Many of you who know me know I dislike running. I don't run. Or I rarely do. It's just not a goal of mine. BUT. Back in the day (ha, I'm not old so that sounds funny) my friends and I wouldn't run too much fearing it would make our gains (muscles) deflate. There was this notion from bodybuilders that the second you start running, POOF, all of your muscle is going to be used as energy and you're going to shrink into a little ball of nothing. We know today thats pretty BS. Now, if I
COMPLETELY switched my training and focus and rain 5x per week and lifted 1x, yes, my body would definitely change. But throwing in some runs here and there coupled with strength training is something we probably want to do for our good ol respiratory system.
- Fasting 16 hours per day burns more fat. NOPE. At one point, I used too fast. There was a bunch of research that came out years ago saying the body is going to burn more fat
while fasted then while fed. So, I was like 'hey I want to be as ripped as possible so let's do this'. That is not true. You will burn calories while fasted, but, not all of those calories burned will be from fat. Our body will burn fat throughout the day, as it deems necessary, exhaling it when we breathe out. Calories WILL always rein supreme.
- Everyone has 24 hours in a day. True...but they are all not the same 24 hours. I used
to be one of those trainers, "there's 24 hours in a day...you can meal prep, get your workout in, do this, do that, blah, blah blahhhh". That, in fact, is NAHT true. We all don't have the same 24 hours. We all lead very, very different lives. I don't have children. I LIVE in a gym. It's my job. I can do whatever I want all the time. Fitness can be my number one priority. For others, fitness is the last priority. Family, kids, mom's, dad's, work, sports & other activites can all take
precedent over fitness in someone else's lives. It's up to me to help them navigate around that and make fitness APART of their lives, however that looks for them.
It's always good to take a step back and reflect on things like this. In every area in life, not just fitness or your job. I've also grown as a person over the last 10 years. Change is
good. Reflect on yourself and how you can make yourself better. If I was still preaching or believing these things above....I may not be where I am today....
And yes, burpees are one of the most pointless exercises. 99% of the time they are performed
when you are exhausted so everyone always has shit form. It's also usually thrown in a workout to make you tired to seem like its a good fitness class. It's not. Burpees don't do shit. Except get people hurt. And feeling miserable😅🤘🏻.
Have a great
week!
